Great piece, Aaron. And I totally agree with Anthony – the underground we're talking about here is not a 'stepping stone' for anything, especially not for becoming hugely popular in the mainstream. Some might view their career that way, but those are usually not the artists I'm interested in either. But I am also part of the older demographic that Anthony seems to cater to. If I were an artist in my early to mid-20s and struggling financially, I might have a different perspective.

Thanks for the thoughtful response! I agree and perhaps the worst consequence of the increased cost of living (and static if not diminishing returns for artists) would be the younger demographic not being able to grow into those underground artists with longer term careers, who can have a community who follow them consistently and regularly attend their shows. Luckily, I see a lot of younger people supporting their peers in London, with what limited resources they do have, comparatively.
